Equis – Mapping non-binary identities in Argentina

What was this project about?

An in-house project by Mover Cooperativa, supported by the Fondo de Acción Urgente para América Latina y el Caribe. In Argentina, the recognition of non-binary identities rests on significant legal advances, such as the Gender Identity Law and the addition of the “X” marker on official documents. Even so, the available information on rights, administrative procedures, population data and the political context is often scattered, hard to reach or not systematized at all. The challenge was to produce clear, accessible and situated material that would make visible the existence and the rights of non-binary people in Argentina, at a time of rising hate speech and setbacks for LGBTIQNB+ rights.

We produced a piece of research, systematization and public communication that brings together legal, historical, statistical and political information on non-binary identities in Argentina. The document walks through the national and international human rights framework, analyses Decree 476/2021 and the addition of the “X”, presents the available data on the non-binary population, offers guidance on the administrative procedure for changing registry records, and examines the current context in the face of the advance of the right wing and hate speech.

The outcome was an accessible, publicly available publication that helps democratize access to information about the rights of non-binary people in Argentina. The material works as a tool for training, advocacy and capacity building for social organizations, activists, institutions and anyone interested in understanding the rights framework in force, the progress made and the challenges still ahead for the full recognition of non-binary identities.
